Ngày nay chúng ta nghĩ một quyển sách như là nhiều tờ giấy có chứa văn bản, hình ảnh minh hoạ, tranh ảnh, vv, ... Do tính bền và khả năng di động của chúng, công dụng chính của sách là để giữ gìn và truyền tải thông tin. Trong thời cổ đại, người ta đã viết trên các bảng đất sét, gỗ hoặc các bản tre gắn với dây, hoặc cuốn sách cuộn để lưu trữ thông tin. Sau đó, với việc phát minh ra giấy, người Trung Quốc có cuốn sách đầu tiên được gọi là Jingangjing (kinh Kim Cang) in năm 868. Trong thế kỷ 20, bất chấp thách thức từ các phương tiện truyền thông khác như đài phát thanh, truyền hình và máy tính, sách vẫn tiếp tục là một phương tiện chính để phổ biến kiến thức, hướng dẫn và giải trí về kỹ năng và nghệ thuật, và để lưu giữ kinh nghiệm của con người.
