THE OMISSION OF RELATIVE PRONOUNS

Exercise 1: Rewrite the following sentences, using suitable relative pronouns:
1. I have a class. It begins at 8 am.
2. I know a park. It has the zoo and the Open- Air theatre.
3. My sister asked me a question. I couldn't answer it.
4. A lion is an animal. This animal lives in Africa.
5. The bus is always crowded. I take it to school every day.
6. The blouse is made of silk. Mary is wearing it.
7. The plane leaves at 7 o'clock. I'm taking it to Hanoi.
8. I had a good time on the trip. I took it to the National Park.
9. The chair is hard. I'm sitting on it.
10. I want to tell you about the party. I went to it last year.
11. There are policeman. They caught the thief.
12. Here are the letters. They arrived this morning.
13. Where's the lady? She asked for some more tea.
14. That's the house. I was born in it.
15. The clothes come from France. They are very good.
16. I met the people. You told me about them.
17. The market has fresh vegetables. I usually go to it.
18. Do you know the children? They live in that house.

Exercise 2 : Underline any relative pronouns that can be left out in these sentences
1. I think that my boss is the person who I admire most.
2. Harry, who was tired, went to bed very early.
3. We're taking the train that leaves at 6.00.
4. Have you seen the book that I left here on the desk?
5. The film which we liked most was the French one.
6. My radio, which isn't very old, has suddenly stopped working.
7. The clothes which you left behind are at the reception desk.
8. The couple who met me at the station took me out to dinner.
9. Last week I ran into an old friend who I hadn't seen for ages.
10. Don't cook the meat that I put in the freezer - it's for the dog.

Exercise 3 : Put one suitable relative pronoun in each space:

Exercise 1 : Change the adjective clauses to adjective phrases:
1. Dr. Stanton, who is the president of the university, will give a speech at the commencement ceremonies.

Exercise 2: Combine the two sentences:
1. The city has six schools. Two of them are junior colleges.
2. The professor has assigned the students a research paper. The purpose of the research paper is to acquaint them with methods of scholarly inquiry.
3. I shut the car door on my necktie. That was really stupid of me.
4. Jack was fired from his job. That surprised all of his co-workers.
5. My roommate never picks up after herself. This irritates me.
6. My country is dependent upon its income from coffee. The price of coffee varies according to fluctuations in the world market.
7. I tried on six pairs of shoes. I liked none of them.
8. That company currently has five employees .All of them are computer experts.
9. We toured a 300 year- old- house. The exterior of the house consisted of logs cemented with clay.
10. After the riot, over one hundred people were taken to the hospital. Many of them had been innocent bystanders.
