READING COMPREHENSION: Read the following passage and choose the best answer (A, B, C or D) for each question.

Although they are safe to use in the short term, coal, gas and oil present a long-term threat to the environment. All three types of fossil fuels produce carbon dioxide in far greater quantities than plants can use. The carbon dioxide then accumulates in the atmosphere and may even increase the earth’s “heat load” and lead to global rises in temperature. Furthermore, all three fossil fuels are non-renewable forms of energy.

Geothermal power is unlikely ever to be an energy source of major importance. It is limited and is exploitable in only a few places. Hydro-power offers a much more useful source of energy. It is also renewable but its availability is limited. Dams cannot be built in certain areas. Wind power is a pollution-free source of energy but it cannot be used in many parts of the world where there is insufficient wind. Wave power is non - polluting and doesn’t add to the earth’s heat but it is ineffective where the sea is usually calm.

Solar power is renewable. It neither causes pollution nor adds to the earth’s heat load. Unfortunately, solar power is not distributed equally and it also requires expensive equipment. Finally, nuclear power provides a very efficient and renewable power source. However, not only is there a great danger of leaks or accidents but there is also the problem of the disposal of radioactive waste.

  1. The threat caused by fossil fuels in the long term is _____________________.

  1. The safety of using them

  2. The non-renewable forms of energy

  3. The increase in global temperatures

  4. The greater quantities of carbon dioxide in plants

  1. Geothermal power is less popular than other renewable sources of energy because ___________.

  1. It is dangerous sometimes

  2. It is not available in many places

  3. It is polluted

  4. It costs a lot to exploit

  1. It is worrying to use nuclear power because _______________________.

  1. It is inefficient

  2. It can cause accidents

  3. It is non-renewable

  4. It is not leaking

  1. What is NOT true about the passage?

  1. Fossil fuels are unlimited and safe to use in the distant future.

  2. Hydro-power is impossible in places where dams cannot be built.

  3. Like any other renewable sources of energy, solar energy has become disadvantages.

  4. The use of solar energy and wind power depends on the weather.

  1. The word “accumulates” in the passage is closest in meaning to:

  1. builds up B. declines C. decreases D. gets smaller

TASK 2: Ss’s own answers.

Sample 1: Formal letter

Dear Sir,

I have lived here for five years and during this time I have used most of the services of Thanh Ba post office. Now I am writing to show you my opinions of these services. The staff here are very helpful and polite. They are willing to help when we need. The prices of the services here are quite reasonable, so most people in our neighborhood use the services here. However, there are still some matters. The equipment in the post office needs upgrading. Sometimes I needed to fax an urgent document but it was impossible because the fax machine was out of order. Moreover, the delivery of newspapers is never punctual. One more thing I want to mention is that the security conditions of the post office are not very good. There used to be property loss here.

I am writing in the hope that these matters will be improved. If so, I believe more and more people will go to Thanh Ba post office.

Yours faithfully,

Sample 2: Semi-formal letter

Dear Mr. Director,

I am writing about the quality of the services of your post office.

I am satisfied with some of your services. However, there is still something that I am dissatisfied with.

Firstly, the post office is closed too early. Sometimes I need to make an emergent phone call after 9 and this service is not available.

Secondly, the prices for sending oversea mails are far too expensive compared with other post office in the district.

Finally, there is no one to look after the motorbikes of the customers. Therefore, we are always nervous when leaving the motorbikes outside.

I would suggest that the post office should open until 10 p.m and that there should be someone to keep an eye on the motorbikes of customers.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Nguyen Van A
