Robert Capa is name that has for many years been synonymous with war photography.2. Born in Hungary in 1913 as Friedmann Endre Ernő, Capa was forced to leave his nativecountry after his involvement in anti government protests. Capa had originally wanted tobecome writer, but after his arrival in Berlin had first found work as photographer. Helater left Germany and moved to France due to the rise in Nazism. He tried to find work as afreelance journalist and it was here that he changed his name to Robert Capa, mainlybecause he thought it would sound more American.3. In 1936, after the breakout of the Spanish Civil war, Capa went to Spain and it was hereover the next three years that he built his reputation as war photographer. It was here tooin 1936 that he took one of his most famous pictures, The Death of Loyalist Soldier One ofCapa’s most famous quotes was 'If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not closeenough.' And he took his attitude of getting close to the action to an extreme. Hisphotograph, The Death of Loyalist Soldier is prime example of this as Capa captures thevery moment the soldier falls. However, many have questioned the authenticity of thisphotograph, claiming that it was staged.4. When World war II broke out, Capa was in New York, but he was soon back in Europecovering the war for Life magazine. Some of his most famous work was created on 6th June1944 when he swam ashore with the first assault on Omaha Beach in the D-Day invasion ofNormandy. Capa, armed only with two cameras, took more than one hundred photographs inthe first hour of the landing, but mistake in the darkroom during the drying of the filmdestroyed all but eight frames. It was the images from these frames however that inspiredthe visual style of Steven Spielberg's Oscar winning movie ‘Saving Private Ryan’. When Life_ Page /8 _Doc24.vnmagazine published the photographs, they claimed that they were slightly out of focus, andCapa later used this as the title of his autobiographical account of the war.5. Capa’s private life was no less dramatic. He was friend to many of Hollywood’s directors, actors and actresses. In 1943 he fell in love with the wife of actor John Austin. His affair withher lasted until the end of the war and became the subject of his war memoirs. He was atone time lover to actress Ingrid Bergman. Their relationship finally ended in 1946 when herefused to settle in Hollywood and went off to Turkey.6. In 1947 Capa was among group of photojournalists who founded Magnum Photos. Thiswas co-operative organisation set up to support photographers and help them to retainownership of the copyright to their work.7. Capa went on to document many other wars. He never attempted to glamorise warthough, but to record the horror. He once said, "The desire of any war photographer is to beput out of business."8. Capa died as he had lived. After promising not to photograph any more wars, he acceptedan assignment to go to Indochina to cover the first Indochina war. On May 25th 1954 Capawas accompanying French regiment when he left his jeep to take some photographs of theadvance and stepped on land mine. He was taken to nearby hospital, still clutching hiscamera, but was pronounced dead on arrival. He left behind him testament to the horrorsof war and standard for photojournalism that few others have been able to reach.9. Capa’s legacy has lived on though and in 1966 his brother Cornell founded theInternational Fund for Concerned Photography in his honor. There is also Robert CapaGold Medal, which is given to the photographer who publishes the best photographicreporting from abroad with evidence of exceptional courage. Humanity's unfounded fear and hatred of these ancient creatures is leading to aworldwide slaughter that may result in the extinction of many coastal shark species. Theshark is the victim of warped attitude of wildlife protection; we strive only to protect thebeautiful, non-threatening parts of our environment. And, in our efforts to restore only non-threatening parts of our earth, we ignore other important parts. perfect illustration of this attitude is the contrasting attitude toward another largesea animal, the dolphin. During the 1980s, environmentalists in the United States protestedthe use of driftnets for tuna fishing in the Pacific Ocean since these nets also caughtdolphins. The environmentalists generated enough political and economic pressure toprevent tuna companies from buying tuna that had been caught in driftnets. In contrast tothis effort on behalf of the dolphins, these same environmentalists have done very little tohelp save the Pacific Ocean sharks whose population has decreased nearly to the point ofextinction. Sharks are among the oldest creatures on earth, having survived in the seas formore than 350 million years. They are extremely efficient animals, feeding on wounded ordying animals, thus performing an important role in nature of weeding out the weakeranimals in species. Just the fact that species such as the Great White Shark have managedto live in the oceans for so many millions of years is enough proof of their efficiency and_ Page /8 _Doc24.vnadaptability to changing environments.
