Ở các nước đang phát triển, 90% người dân sử dụng gỗ để nấu ăn và sưởi ấm. Họ chặt cây để lấy củi đốt. Nhưng cây là quan trọng. Chúng làm mát đất dưới chân họ và giữ cho mặt trời khỏi những cây nhỏ hơn. Khi lá rơi từ cây, chúng làm cho đất đai trở nên phong phú hơn. Khi cây đã mất, những cây nhỏ hơn chết và đất trở thành sa mạc. 

Con người có thể làm sa mạc, nhưng con người có thể ngăn chặn sự tăng trưởng của chúng. Algeria trồng một bức tường cây xanh của cây cối ngang bờ sa mạc để ngăn cát sa mạc lan rộng ở Mauritania, đặt một bức tường tương tự xung quanh thủ đô của mình, Iran đặt một lớp vỏ mỏng dầu mỏ lên các khu vực cát và cây cối. Các quốc gia khác xây dựng kênh rạch dài để đưa nước vào các khu vực sa mạc.
