Experiments have shown that in selecting personnel for job, interviewing is at best hindrance andmay even cause harm. These studies have disclosed that the judgments of interviewers differ markedlyand bear little or no relationship to the adequacy of the job applicants. Of the many reasons why thisshould be the case, three in particular stand out.The first reason is related to an error of judgment known as the halo effect. If person has onenoticeable good trait, their other characteristics will be judged as better than they really are. Thus, anindividual who dresses smartly and shows self-confidence is likely to be judged capable of doing jobwell regardless of his or her real ability.Interviewers are also prejudiced by an effect called the primacy effect. This error occurs wheninterpretation of later information is distorted by earlier connected information. Hence, in an interviewsituation, the interviewer spends most of the interview trying to confirm the impression given by thecandidate in the first few moments. Studies have repeatedly demonstrated that such an impression isunrelated to the aptitude of the applicant. The phenomenon known as the contrast effect also skews the judgment of interviewers. suitablecandidate may be underestimated because he or she contrasts with previous one who appearsexceptionally intelligent. Likewise, an average candidate who is preceded by one who gives weakshowing may be judged as more suitable than he or she really is.Since interviews as form of personnel selection have been shown to be inadequate, other selectionprocedures have been devised which more accurately predict candidate suitability. Of the various testsdevised, the predictor which appears to do this most successfully is cognitive ability as measured by avariety of verbal and spatial tests.Question 26: The word hindrance in paragraph is closest in meaning to ______.A. assistance B. encouragement C. procedure D. interferenceQuestion 27: The word they in paragraph refers to ______.A. applicants B. judgments C. interviewers D. characteristicsQuestion 28: This passage mainly discusses the ______.A. Other solid material suchas silicon can conduct electricity but only effectively at certain temperatures. Also, some substances suchas salt (sodium chloride) can conduct when molten or when dissolved in water. The ability of metals toconduct electricity is due to how their atoms bond together. In order to bond together the metal atomslose at least one of their outermost electrons. This leaves the metal atoms with positive charge and theyare now strictly ions. The lost electrons are free to move in what are known as sea of electrons. Sincethe electrons are negatively charged they attract the ions and this is what keeps the structure together. An electric current is flow of charge and since the electrons in the sea of electrons are free tomove they can be made to flow in one direction when source of electrical energy such as battery isconnected to the metal. Hence we have an electric current flowing through the wire, and this is whatmakes metals such good conductors of electricity. The only other common solid conducting material thatpencil users are likely to encounter is graphite (what the ‘lead’ of pencil is made from). Graphite is aform of carbon and again the carbon atoms bond in such way that there is sea of electrons that can bemade to flow as an electric current. Likewise, if we have an ionic substance like salt we can make theelectrically charged ions flow to create current but only when those ions are free to move, either whenthe substance is liquid or dissolved in water. In its solid state an ionic substance like salt cannot conductelectricity as its charged ions cannot flow. Electrical insulators are substances that cannot conduct electricity well either, because they containno charged particles or any charged particles they might contain do not flow easily. Water itself is poorconductor or electricity as it does not contain significant amount of fully charged particles (the ends ofa water molecule are partly charged but overall the molecule is neutral). However, most water weencounter does contain dissolved charged particles, so it will be more conductive than pure water. Manyof the problems that occur when touching electrical devices with wet hands result from the ever-presentsalt that is left on our skin through perspiration and it dissolves in the water to make it more conductive.Question 39 Electrical conductivity is A. one of the most important properties of metalsB. one of the key properties of most solid materialsC. impossible for any substance when it is dissolved in waterD. completely impossible for siliconQuestion 40 The word outermost in paragraph mostly means A. the lightest B. nearest to the inside C. furthest from the inside D. the heaviestQuestion 41 The atoms of metal can bond together because Trang Mã 222ềA. the lost electrons cannot move freely in the sea of electronsB. they lose all of electronsC. electrons can flow in single directionD. negatively charged electrons attract positive ionsQuestion 42 The word they in paragraph refers to A. charged ions B. electric currents C. charged particles D. electrical insulatorsQuestion 43 Water is poor conductor because it contains A. no positive or negative electric charge B. only small amount of fully charged particlesC. only positive electric charge D. only negative electric chargeQuestion 44 Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
