The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created need forexecutives with knowledge of foreign language and skills in cross-cultural communication.Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have notenjoyed the same level in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreigncounterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose ofreaching an agreement. Involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate ineither one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and howcompromise is reached within the culture of negotiation. In many international negotiations business abroad, Americans are perceived aswealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that Americans represents alarge multimillion–dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargainingfurther. The American negotiator’s role became that of and impersonal purveyor ofinformation and cash, the image that succeeds only in underming the negotiation. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that mayserve to confirm that stereotypical perception, while subverting the negotiator’s position. Twotraits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatienceon that part of Amarican negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist onrealizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationshipestablished between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard forthe time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiation andthe success of negotiators. For Americans to play more effective role in internationalbusiness negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-culturalunderstanding.Question 1: What’s the author main point ?A. Edison in 1879 created ademand for cheap, readily available fuel with which to generate large amounts of electricpower. Coal seem to fit the bill and it fueled the earliest power stations (which were set up atthe end of the nineteenth century by Edison himself). As more power plants were constructedthroughout the country, the reliance on coal increased. Since the first World War, coal-firedpower plants have accounted for about half of the electric produced in the United States eachyear. In 1986 such plants had combined generating capacity of 289,000 megawatts andconsumed 83 percent of the nearly 900 million tons of coal mined in the country that year.Given the uncertainty of the future growth of nuclear power and in the supply of oil andnatural gas, coal-fired power plants could well provide up to 70 percent of the electric powerin the United Stats by the end of the century. Yet, inspite of the fact that coal has long been source of electricity and may remainone for many years (coal represents about 80 percent of the United States fossil-fuelreserves), it has actually never been the most desirable fossil fuel for power plants. Coalcontain less energy per unit of weight than natural gas or oil; it is difficult to transport, and itis associated with host of environmental issues, among them acid rain. Since the late 1960’sproblems of emission control and waste disposal have sharply reduced the appeal of coal-fired power plants. The cost of ameliorating these environmental problems, along with therising cost of building facility as large and complex as coal-fired power plant, has alsomade such plants less attractive from purely economic perspective. Change in the technological base of coal-fired power plants could restore theirattractiveness, however. Whereas some of these changes are evoluntary and are intendedmainly to increase the productivity of existing plants, completely new technologies forburning coal cleanly are also being developed.Question 33: The phrase fit the bill in paragraph can be replaced by :A. be used B. be suitable C. be paid D. be discoveredQuestion 34: In the author’s opinion, the important of coal-generated electricity couldincrease in the future for which of the following reasons ?Trang http://dethithpt.com Website chuyên thi th file word có gi iề ảA.
